How It Works
What IV Sedation Dentistry Involves and Who It Works Best For
IV sedation, sometimes called twilight sedation, is the deepest form of conscious sedation available in a dental setting. A sedative is delivered through a small cannula in your hand or arm and within a few minutes you enter a deeply relaxed state where you remain conscious and breathing on your own but are largely unaware of the procedure and unlikely to form clear memories of it. It is not a general anaesthetic, you do not go fully under but for most patients the experience feels close to it.
At Twilight Dental, IV sedation is administered by Mayukh Verma, our clinical nurse anaesthetist, who works alongside Dr Ryan Liang throughout every sedation appointment. Having a dedicated anaesthetist present means your sedation level and vital signs are monitored continuously by someone whose sole focus is your safety and comfort, while Dr Liang focuses entirely on the clinical work.
We offer IV sedation dentistry for patients across Ipswich including Brassall, Leichhardt, Raceview and Ripley. Dr Ryan Liang holds a Graduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation and a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and our clinic is equipped specifically to deliver sedation dentistry safely in a general practice setting.
We offer a free 20-minute consultation before any sedation appointment. At that visit we go through your health history, explain the process in detail, answer every question you have and make sure IV sedation is the right option for your situation before anything is booked.
Benefits
Why Ipswich Patients Choose IV Sedation Dentistry at Twilight Dental
Deeply Relaxed Throughout
IV sedation produces a profound state of relaxation from the moment it takes effect. You remain conscious but largely unaware of what is happening, and most patients retain little or no memory of the procedure afterwards.
Dedicated Anaesthetist On-Site
Mayukh Verma, our clinical nurse anaesthetist, administers and monitors your sedation for the full duration of every appointment. Dr Liang handles the dental work. Two practitioners, two focuses, one appointment.
Any Procedure, Any Complexity
IV sedation is available for any treatment at Twilight Dental, from a single filling to complex restorative or implant work. Multiple procedures can also be completed in a single sedation appointment, reducing the number of visits needed.
Monitored Continuously
Your vital signs are tracked throughout by our clinical nurse anaesthetist. This level of monitoring is what separates properly delivered sedation dentistry from lighter options and is a non-negotiable part of every sedation appointment.
Free Consultation Included
Every IV sedation patient receives a free 20-minute consultation before the procedure. We review your health history, explain what sedation involves, and confirm it is the right option before any appointment is scheduled.
Dr Liang Is Sedation Qualified
Dr Ryan Liang holds a Graduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation, one of the formal qualifications required to provide IV sedation in a general dental practice. Not all dental clinics in the Ipswich area are equipped or qualified to offer this.
Been Avoiding Dental Care Because of Anxiety?
IV sedation makes it possible to get the treatment you need without the experience you have been dreading. Start with a free consultation and we will take it from there.
What to Expect
What an IV Sedation Appointment Looks Like at Twilight Dental
A Free Consultation First
Before any sedation appointment, we sit down with you for a free 20-minute consultation. We review your health history and medications, explain how IV sedation works, and answer every question you bring. Nothing proceeds until you are fully comfortable with the plan.
The Day of Your Appointment
You arrive having followed the fasting instructions from your consultation. Mayukh Verma places a small cannula and administers the sedative. Within minutes you enter a deeply relaxed state while Dr Liang carries out your treatment and Mayukh monitors your vital signs throughout.
Recovery and Going Home
When treatment is done, we monitor you in the clinic until you are ready to leave. You need a responsible adult to drive you home and should rest for the day. We give you written aftercare instructions before you leave so you know exactly what to expect.
Why Twilight Dental
Why Choose Twilight Dental for IV Sedation in Ipswich?
Most dental practices in the Ipswich area do not offer IV sedation at all. Those that do often refer patients to a separate facility or bring in an external anaesthetist with whom the treating dentist has no established working relationship. At Twilight Dental, Mayukh Verma works as part of our core clinical team. He and Dr Liang have an established approach to sedation appointments that runs smoothly because they have worked together consistently, not because they met in the waiting room before your procedure.
Dr Ryan Liang holds a Graduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation alongside his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. The clinic is purpose-built and equipped for sedation dentistry in a general practice setting, which means the environment you are treated in is calm and familiar rather than a clinical facility designed for surgical procedures.
We also take the time before every sedation appointment to understand your specific situation. Dental anxiety looks different for different people and the way we approach your appointment reflects that. If you have questions before booking your consultation, call us. We answer after hours too.
Is It Right for You?
Who Is IV Sedation Dentistry Suitable For?
IV sedation works well for patients with significant dental anxiety who find standard appointments genuinely difficult to get through, patients with a strong gag reflex that makes dental work uncomfortable or impossible, patients who need complex or lengthy procedures and want to get more done in fewer visits, patients who have been avoiding dental care for years and need substantial treatment and patients for whom happy gas does not provide sufficient relief.
It is not suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions and medications affect whether sedation is appropriate, which is why the pre-treatment health assessment at your consultation is a required step rather than an optional one. Pregnancy, some respiratory conditions and certain medications are among the factors that may affect suitability. We assess each patient individually and give you a clear answer at your consultation. If IV sedation is not right for your situation, we will tell you and discuss what the alternatives are.

Which Option Suits You?
IV Sedation or Happy Gas — Which One Is Right for Your Situation?
Both options reduce dental anxiety but they work differently and suit different situations. Happy gas keeps you relaxed and aware, clears from your system quickly and lets you drive home afterwards. It suits patients with mild to moderate anxiety who want a little extra support during an appointment without deeper sedation. IV sedation goes significantly further. You enter a deeply relaxed state with little awareness of the procedure and minimal memory of it afterwards, but you need someone to drive you home and a full day to rest. Most patients find happy gas is enough for routine and moderately involved appointments. IV sedation tends to suit patients with significant anxiety, a strong gag reflex, lengthy or complex procedures, or those who have found happy gas insufficient in the past. If you are not sure which applies to your situation, call us before booking and we will help you figure it out.

FAQ
Common Questions About IV Sedation Dentistry
What is IV sedation dentistry and how does it work?
IV sedation dentistry uses a sedative delivered through a small cannula to produce a deeply relaxed state during dental treatment. You remain conscious and breathing independently but are largely unaware of what is happening and unlikely to retain clear memories of the procedure. It is not a general anaesthetic but it is significantly deeper than happy gas. At Twilight Dental, IV sedation is administered by Mayukh Verma, our clinical nurse anaesthetist, who monitors you continuously throughout the appointment.
Is IV sedation dentistry safe?
Yes, when administered by a qualified practitioner in an appropriately equipped setting. At Twilight Dental, IV sedation is delivered by a clinical nurse anaesthetist who monitors your vital signs and sedation level for the full duration of the appointment. Dr Ryan Liang holds a Graduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation and the clinic is equipped for sedation dentistry in a general practice setting. A pre-treatment health assessment at your consultation confirms it is appropriate for your individual situation.
Is there an IV sedation dentist near me in Ipswich?
Yes. Twilight Dental offers IV sedation dentistry at our Brassall clinic, serving patients from across the Ipswich area. Dr Ryan Liang is one of a small number of dentists in the Ipswich region qualified to provide IV sedation in a general dental practice setting. We offer a free 20-minute consultation before any sedation appointment. Call us or book online to arrange yours.
Do I need someone to drive me home after IV sedation?
Yes. The sedative takes several hours to clear fully from your system and you cannot drive after an IV sedation appointment. You need a responsible adult to take you home and should plan to rest for the remainder of the day. We give you full written aftercare instructions at your consultation and again on the day of your appointment so you know exactly what to arrange beforehand.
How much does IV sedation dentistry cost in Ipswich?
The cost of IV sedation is additional to the cost of the dental treatment being performed. We provide a full breakdown covering both at your free consultation before any appointment is scheduled. Some health funds contribute toward sedation costs depending on your level of cover. Prices are a guide only and subject to individual clinical assessment.
